Modified starch is based on the inherent properties of starch. In order to improve the performance of starch and expand its application range, new functional groups are introduced into the starch molecules or the size of starch molecules and the properties of starch granules are changed through physical, chemical or enzymatic treatment, thereby changing the natural properties of starch (such as gelatinization temperature, thermal viscosity and its stability, freeze-thaw stability, gel strength, film-forming properties, transparency, etc.) to make it more suitable for certain application requirements.
Papermaking industry is another important field of modified starch application in my country. Modified starch is mainly used as an additive in papermaking, which can improve the smoothness, hardness and water resistance of paper. At the same time, because modified starch has good film-forming properties and transparency, it can also be used to produce packaging paper and decorative paper.
According to its use method, papermaking starch can be divided into 4 categories: starch added to the pulp, mist starch (mainly for interlayer enhancement), surface sizing starch and coating powder. It can be said that modified starch is almost suitable for the whole process of papermaking.
From the papermaking process: modified starch for wet addition; surface sizing starch for surface sizing; coating starch for coating machine. In addition, there are interlayer spraying starch for different paper types. Different papermaking requirements require different types of modified starch.
In the wet section: modified starch is needed to reduce the loss rate of fine fibers, improve the water filtration effect, reduce the anionic garbage in the wet system, and reduce the COD of white water.
In the surface sizing process: modified starch has good film-forming properties and high surface strength, which can reduce hair loss and powder loss, and increase the surface strength, glossiness and smoothness of paper.
 In the coating process: the coating is required to have strong adhesion, good rheology, high water retention and good viscosity stability.
In addition, the finished paper has bright colors and good ink absorption.
